Just wanted to post on this Good Friday about one of the most misunderstood moments of Jesus’ crucifixion. When He cried, ‘My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?’ He was employing a technique that most rabbis of the day used while teaching – quoting only the first line of a psalm in order to direct attention to the lesson of it. This psalm was Psalm 22, which every good Jew knew by heart. The Psalm prophesied the situation that Jesus was in at THAT moment and was the prophecy of the suffering Messiah. The Jewish leadership that was at Calvary KNEW this and obviously misquoted Christ in order to save face (Jesus was not calling out to Elijah, known by the Jews as the ‘janitor of heaven’ often called upon for special favors). So many people today misunderstand that Jesus was teaching AT THAT MOMENT and pointing out the fulfillment of the prophecy of the suffering Messiah to the Jews present. The mocking insults and obfuscation that followed were not due to ignorance, but treachery.
